Brake Change
Yesterday I spent the majority of the day changing the brakes of my car. I drive a 2005 Honda accord which is luckily a fairly easy vehicle to maintain. I have changed brakes many times before so I did not anticipate having much trouble. It was a mistake to assume that things would go well. The driver side brakes went well, although it took longer than I thought it would, due to me being rusty at doing the work, as well as the actual brakes being fairly rusty. The real problem came when I went to change the passenger side brakes. Taking them off was a breeze, but I ran into an issue when I went to replace it. When replacing brake pads you must compress the caliper to get the room to put the new pads on. Unfortunately for me I discovered that my caliper was stuck and I would need to replace the caliper as well. This was an issue for me as, even though I have done all the maintenance on my car, I had never changed a caliper before. First I would need to get a new one. I checked the availability of the part online and saw there was luckily one available at my local store. I went there to find out this was untrue. I would have to go 30 minutes away to the store that did have the part. I finally had the part and could being the replacement. As you could expect I did not do very well. It ended up taking several hours and all in all my brake change took almost 6 hours, which was far off from my original estimate of 2 hours. The best thing I can take out of the experience was new knowledge.
